Sustainable Livelihoods & Economic Empowerment
Building the capacity of individuals and households in Mwiki and surrounding areas to achieve sustainable livelihoods and greater economic self-reliance.
Programme Overview
The Sustainable Livelihoods & Economic Empowerment programme is one of the core areas of work of Abundant Life Hope. It responds directly to the organization’s constitutional objective to mobilize and empower community members towards sustainable livelihoods and self-reliance, and to undertake income-generating and welfare activities that improve the economic wellbeing of members and the community.
Many households in Mwiki and surrounding areas face challenges related to limited income opportunities, skills gaps, and economic vulnerability. This programme seeks to address these challenges through practical, community-rooted approaches that prioritize long-term self-reliance over short-term relief.
Activities under this programme are developed in consultation with community members and are implemented in a manner consistent with the organization’s values of integrity, empowerment, compassion and accountability.
Why This Issue Matters in the Community
Economic vulnerability affects the ability of individuals and families to meet basic needs, invest in education and health, and plan for the future. In many urban and peri-urban communities such as Mwiki, limited access to stable income opportunities, skills training and productive assets can trap households in cycles of poverty.
By focusing on sustainable livelihoods, Abundant Life Hope aims to strengthen the economic foundation of households so that community members can progressively move toward greater dignity, hope and self-reliance — in line with the organization’s vision.
Abundant Life Hope’s Approach
Our approach to livelihoods and economic empowerment is guided by the following principles:
- 1 Community participation — Residents help identify viable livelihood opportunities and shape the design of activities.
- 2 Empowerment over dependency — We prioritize skills, knowledge and productive capacity rather than one-off handouts.
- 3 Inclusivity — Special attention is given to women, youth, persons with disabilities and other vulnerable groups.
- 4 Sustainability — Activities are designed to continue generating benefits beyond any single project cycle.
- 5 Accountability and transparency — Resources and outcomes are managed and reported with integrity.
